CIVIL WAR EVENT IN JULY

VENUE: 2nd Annual Robert L. Hein/Eaglesfield Estate Civil War Living History Event
LOCATION
: 4870 E US HWY 40, BRAZIL, INDIANA 47834
DATE
: Fri. July 23 10:00 till dark--Sat. July 24, 8am-10pm--Sun. July 26, 2010 8am-4pm

The second annual civil war living history event will be held in memory of Robert L. Hein, a WWII veteran and Normandy D-day invasion survivor. He purchased the former Eaglesfield Estate, 17 acre pre-civil war, northern plantation in 2005. Bob passed away in 2007 leaving this historical estate to his 2 daughters to continue to preserve for posterity.

The home was built in 1855 and the barn completed in 1890's with both being on the National Historical Registry. The barn one of the most photographed barns in Indiana was chosen to be the centerfold of the 2008 Country Woman’s Calendar featuring barns from across the country.

The Pre-Civil war property has served as personal homes for several families, a way station, a restaurant, a motel, rental apartments, and most recently an antique mall. The barn at one time housed over 5000 chickens on the upper floors and 40 livestock on the main floor and currently houses one of the most unique antique malls in the Nation with over 10,000 items for sale.

Abraham Lincoln used the property as a way station during his travels back and forth to Washington D.C. John Wayne, Al Capone, and Jimmy Hoffa have all been reported to have used the Hunt’s restaurant during their visits to the local area along with other travelers on U.S. 40.

The Civil War Living History Encampment with the Freeman’s Battery of the Army of Tennessee will be on Friday-Saturday & Sunday, July 23-25. The living history event will be free to the public with a small parking donation being collected to help defray some of the costs involved. This year’s event will have 6 cannon’s and up to 100 re-enactors. Some visitors may even be inducted into basic training or firing of cannon’s or muskets. This will include period culture, roles of women and children, a Ladies High Tea, North and South encampment sites, and soldier’s experiences with skirmishes of rifle and cannon fire at the Battle of Brazil, with a Saturday evening Camp Fire, Round Dance/Hoedown/sing along and a presentation by Ron Mott of WPFR Radio A.M.-1480 presenting his “Families Civil War History of Parke County” and a brief presentation about “The Money System During the Civil War” presented by Corporate sponsor Waddell & Reed Financial Advisors. After dark enjoy the special night firing of all 6 cannons lighting the sky.

A trader’s day market area will be open to anyone who would like to participate. Individuals or groups are invited to set up to help raise money for their organizations or promote their business. Colonel James Raney will fire up the adobe oven area with open fire cooked beans and cornbread. A snack bar will be available for food and drinks inside the antique mall.
